MICHAEL GOLDSMITH

Publisher & Editor

Michael Goldsmith, comes from Crawley in Sussex, went to school at Purley in Surrey, flew across to university  at Trinity College, Dublin and spent 27 years working at the BBC as a film editor, with everyone from Sir David Attenborough to Willie Rushton, and Alec Clifton Taylor to Dick Emery. Much of his time was spent on documentaries for series like Omnibus, Chronicle and Six More English Towns.

He became interested in postcards around 1980, became a dealer and fair organiser in 1985 and started running big 2 day fairs in 1991 at Guildford’s Civic Hall, Twickenham Rugby Stadium, Woking Leisure Centre and, for a while, at Coalville in the Midlands. He founded the Wealden Postcard Club in 1985 and the West London Postcard Club in 1989 and became Chairman and President, of both. He began writing for Picture Postcard Monthly around 1985 and twice won the trophy for best article of the year before commencing his own column, Goldsmith’s Gazette which, in due course, became the most famous column in postcards. Faced with the sudden and unexpected closure of PPM as a result of Covid,  Michael restarted the magazine in October 2020, under its new name Picture Postcard Collecting, and has since drawn almost universal praise for the revamped publication. (See some of the comments on this website!) In his spare time he collects postcards of his home town Crawley, as well as Art Nouveau, early cards, advertising posters, modern cards by John Hinde and a variety of artists.
